“Les Gaudrets”
A group of plots located on the heights of the Savennières village, planted on sandy soils above black schist, "Les Gaudrets" embody the terroir profile most commonly found in the appellation area.
This cuvée express the freshness and the typical floral bouquet of Savennières wines. Aromas of white flowers and white fruits open onto an enveloping mouth, carried by a fine acidity and a light bitterness.
Located at the beginning of the Côte des Forges, at the base of La Roche-aux-Moines, the "Clos des Ruchères" (monopole) rests on a hillside of purple schists (rare in the appellation area). It is covered with a very thin layer of soil, only about twenty centimetres deep. Slate schists, deeply fractured and very friable, degrade to form clays with a silky feel. The roots of the vines make their way to dive between the slates and draw their vital resources (water and mineral salts, notably).
This tiny steep plot, worked like a garden, gives birth to an strong identity cuvée, characterised by a great mineral tension. Two years of barrel ageing give it length and aromatic complexity, as well as significant ageing potential.
“Ronceray”
A terroir from which world-renowned sweet wines are produced, the Chaume 1er Cru and Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru appellations also have the capacity to produce great dry whites. The Ronceray cuvée refers to the Abbey of the same name, owner of the Chaume vineyard from the 11th century. Until the French revolution the lords of Haute-Guerche, farming this vineyard, were paying the nuns with "the best quarter of the harvest"... The "Quarts-de-Chaume" name was born.
Ronceray results from the assembly of our plots on the rump of Quarts-de-Chaume. A terroir with complex geology, the marriage of shales and pudding sandstones gives this cuvée a sharp minerality and a floral and fruity richness. A fine bitterness, signature of this terroir, brings complexity and length on the palate.“Les Rouères”
"Les Rouères" is one of the three plots originally listed in the decree creating the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation. Our plot covers nearly 3 Ha of the area, exposed on the South-Eastern slope of the rump of Quarts-de-Chaume. The thin and warm soils rest on puddingstones (sand concretions and rolled gravel), accumulating heat during the day and releasing it during the night.
This powerful terroir brings roundness and a solar power to the wines. A fine bitterness, signature of this terroir, brings complexity and length on the palate.
The puddingstone soils give a spherical and solar character to this cuvée.
"Les Quarts" is the original plot which gave its name to the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation. Indeed until the French revolution the lords of Haute-Guerche, farming this vineyard, were paying the Ronceray Abbey with "the best quarter of the harvest"... The "Quarts-de-Chaume" name was born.
Our plot covers nearly half of the 7 Ha of the area, exposed on the Southern slope of the rump. The soils rest on Precambrian schists, which provide finesse and length. A fine bitterness, signature of this terroir, brings complexity and length on the palate.
In exceptional vintages only, we perpetuate the tradition and produce a sweet wine from this legendary plot. The magic of the Quarts-de-Chaume terroir (sunny South-facing hillside, exposed to the morning mists of the Layon river and aerated by constant winds) then operates... resulting in a botrytis of rare concentration.
The schists soils give this cuvée a vertical tension and an elegant freshness.
"Le Veau" is one of the three plots originally listed in the decree creating the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation. Our plot covers the most part of this small area, exposed to the West. Its name (derived from old French) comes from the shape of the plot, which constitutes a small valley.
The soil is very thin (to non-existant in some parts) as the plot rests on a flush schist area, providing mineral tension and long ageing potential to the wines.
“L’Echarderie”
Our plots of Chaume 1er Cru surround the place called "L’Echarderie", which used to be, until the French revolution, the cellar of the lords of Haute-Guerche (who were farming the Chaume vineyards on behalf of the Ronceray Abbey). The marriage of schists and puddingstones in the soils gives this cuvée a mineral complexity and a slight bitterness on the palate.
“Clos des Bonnes Blanches”
The "Clos des Bonnes Blanches" is one of the emblematic plots located in Saint-Lambert du Lattay, cultivated as single-plot by generations of local winegrowers. Located on a slight slope facing North, these cool soils rest on talc shales.
This late terroir produces delicate and somewhat intellectual wines. They show floral aromas and a strong mineral spine. They are renowned for their long ageing potential.
The "Coteau des Treilles" (monopole) was resurrected in the late 1990s by Jo Pithon. Enjoying an exceptional situation, this hillside had been abandoned after the war because of its steep slopes (from 30 to 70%). After having acquired 70 plots from 25 different owners, Jo reinstalled Chenin on these magmatic rocks of the Armorican Massif.
This plot is located at the heart of the Pont-Barré Natural Reserve, a jewel of protected biodiversity never touched by chemistry. It is a very steep plot, facing South and overlooking the Layon river. It is located on a true geological chaos (composed of spilites, schists, sandstone and puddingstones) which transmits its complexity and minerality to the wine.
This singular terroir gives life to a unique cuvée with very long ageing potential. After two years of barrel ageing, it develops a rare aromatic intensity. Without exuberance, this wine expresses a mineral (and not solar) power. A model of tension, balance and freshness.
This cuvée is a blend of our plots bordering the Layon, which are spread over three villages: Beaulieu-sur-Layon, Saint-Lambert du Lattay and Saint-Aubin de Luigné.
It is characterised by its freshness and great balance. Showing notes of fresh fruit and citrus, the mouth is suave and enveloping and supported by an acidulous sensation.
